Feng Shui FAQs

What is feng shui?

Feng (fung) Shui (schway) is translated literally as wind—water. A working definition might be: “a metaphysical science using observation of the external environment and formulaic analysis of the internal environment in order to assess the potential of a property.”

What is the role of feng shui in the 21st century?

Today, the practice of Traditional Chinese Feng Shui encompasses a broad spectrum of disciplines and issues: urban planning, environmental engineering, architecture and construction, interior design, geography, astronomy, astrology, electromagnetism, and landscape design. The modern feng shui practitioner may work with the client to locate an appropriate building site and to determine the ideal location for a building on that site or on a previously selected site. She may help the client buy a home that is compatible to its family members or to prepare a current home for sale. She may evaluate the energy of an existing office or home to assess the implications regarding health, wealth, and relationships, as well as to ascertain the best spaces within the structure for its occupants.

What is involved in a feng shui consultation?

Prior to the on-site examination of the property, the consultant will ask for certain information: the construction date of the building, the move-in date, and the date(s) of any major renovation(s). She will also need the birth date of the business owner or the birth dates of all family members (year, month, and day; hour if possible). In order to focus on your particular needs, she may ask your purpose for requesting the audit—special concerns or problems you may be encountering or aspects of your life you wish to improve. Although you may be temped to “prepare” your home prior to the consultant’s arrival, it is best to leave the house in its natural state so that her assessment is representative of the actual day-to-day living environment. After being given a tour of the site, the consultant will not need your attention while she analyzes the data and prepares the report.

How long does the on-site evaluation take?

Naturally, it depends on the square footage involved, but about three hours for a 2,500 sq. ft. house. If you do not have a professionally drawn floor plan and the consultant is required to  measure the house and draw a scaled plan, that will significantly add to the time (and cost) of the inspection. Besides the size of the building, a business consultation will also be affected by the number of employees.

Will I know the results immediately?

Yes. You and the consultant will sit down together to review her analysis and recommendations. You will subsequently be mailed a copy of the report and she will keep a second copy in case you have questions at a later date. The consultant’s copy can also be used to generate yearly updates, which are recommended.
